What is Trauma.

Trauma occurs when a person experiences something so disturbing that they respond with intense fear, horror, or helplessness. They will find the event so disturbing that they are unable process it. Sometimes it leads to PTSD, but not always. And not everyone experiences the disturbing event in the same way.

What experiences might be traumatic?

  • Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • A sudden or violent loss of a loved one (traumatic grief)

  • Terrorism and community violence

  • Refugee trauma

  • Life threatening illness (medical trauma)

  • Serious accidents

  • Natural disasters

Trauma Symptoms.

Trauma impacts every area of human functioning- physical, mental, behavioral, social, and spiritual.
