Affirming therapy

LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy in Vadnais Heights, MN & Online

LGBTQ+ people experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health
challenges — not because of who they are, but because of what they face. These challenges are
responses to oppression, not something inherent to being Queer. Discrimination, harassment, and
systemic rejection take a real toll. We understand that, and it shapes how we show up for every client.

‍Some clients who come to us are Queer and want a therapist who's done the work — someone they
don't have to educate. Others are specifically working through identity exploration, coming out, gender, or how being LGBTQ+ intersects with everything else in their life. Either way, you're in the right place.

‍Metanoia Therapy is currently working toward Proud Practice Certification — a credential that verifies a practice has made a commitment to ethically competent care for the LGBTQ+ community, across team training, policies, our environment, and ongoing connection to the community.‍ ‍

What We Support‍ ‍

  • Identity Exploration — Sexual orientation, gender identity, and what it means for you, at your own pace

  • Coming Out — To yourself, family, friends, or your workplace, whenever and however feels right

  • Gender-Affirming Support — Navigating transition, name/pronoun changes, and body image with a therapist who gets it

  • Minority Stress & Discrimination — Processing harassment, rejection, or the daily weight of living in a world not built for you

  • Family & Relationship Dynamics — Estrangement, chosen family, coming out to partners, or navigating LGBTQ+ relationships

  • Intersectionality — How race, faith, disability, or other parts of your identity intersect with being LGBTQ+

  • Anxiety, Depression & Trauma — Rooted in lived experience, not pathologized as "who you are"‍ ‍

Our Approach

‍Affirming care isn't a specialty we bolt on — it's baseline. Every therapist at Metanoia Therapy is expected to show up competent, curious, and without judgment. That means you won't have to explain basic terminology, justify your identity, or manage our discomfort in session.‍ ‍

We're currently working toward Proud Practice Certification, a credential that verifies a practice's ongoing commitment to ethical, competent LGBTQ+ care — covering staff training, office policies, physical environment, and active connection to the community. ‍ ‍

Who This Is For‍

  • Teens exploring identity or navigating coming out

  • Adults working through any of the above, on their own timeline

  • Couples & chosen family navigating relationship dynamics together ‍ ‍
