What is DISCERNMENT COUNSELING.

Discernment counseling is for couples who aren’t sure if they should stay in their relationships.

All individuals of the relationship participate in discernment counseling.

During discernment counseling, the therapist is there to help the couple determine if they want to stay together or separate. No matter the outcome, the therapist helps navigate next steps and helps resolve uncertainty.

Who might benefit.

Any couple or partnership that feels they are at a crossroads in their relationship can benefit from discernment counseling. If there is consideration about ending the relationship, but confusion about if that is the right choice, or what is really wanted, discernment counseling can help.

The goal of discernment counseling is not to convince any person to leave or stay in their relationships; the goal is to make a decision about the relationship and provide the tools and skills needed to do so.

It can be challenging and often scary to make a decision to remain in a relationship or end it. Rarely is it an easy answer, and discernment counseling can help.

what happens.

You might read or hear that discernment counseling is a brief therapy process (around eight sessions) , but all relationships are different and we never want to rush the process of making this big decision.

All individuals of the relationship participate and work with their therapist to process what is happening in the relationship, the difficulties and what the relationship would look like should it continue, and what life would look like if the relationship ended.

Your therapist is not there to make the decision about your relationship, but is instead there to help process the thoughts and feelings of those in the relationship so everyone can come to a clear decision they can make peace with.
