WHAT IS ‘DBT’?
While I love digging deep with my clients and exploring the roots of their issues, sometimes we just need really reliable skills to help us handle our emotions or manage our relationships.
THIS IS WHY I LOVE DBT;
it’s a kind of therapy that teaches clear and practical tools to help with regulating emotions, communicating our needs, and staying present in the here and now.
DBT is broken into four modules:
emotion regulation,
mindfulness,
interpersonal effectiveness, and
distress tolerance.
Each module has lots of techniques to learn and practice! DBT skills is typically done in a group setting; the structure usually is going over homework from the previous session, learning a new skill from one of the four modules, then getting assigned homework to practice the new skill.
Not only do I teach DBT skills a lot with my individual work with clients, I use DBT skills all the time in my personal life! Having a set of tools to help navigate different situations in life is empowering. Life feels a lot more manageable when we feel like we have solid coping skills, and that is exactly what DBT can give you!
